Hello :) I've been crocheting popcorn flowers this week as a distraction from work and the bad weather. I suppose you might call it pro'craft'ination! Just a bit of fun and nonsense really but I decided to add stems using knitting needles (I have lots of wooden knitting needles laying unused in a drawer) and pop them in a jar to brighten up my craft room.
I thought I'd share the pattern here if you fancy a go :)
3mm crochet hook (or the size appropriate for your yarn/tension)
10g balls of 4 ply yarn (I used Scheepjes Catona in yellow and pink or peachy shades)
Knitting needles
ch - chain
ch-sp - chain space
dc - double crochet (US sc)
st(s) - stitch(es)
tr - treble crochet (US dc)
As follows: make five tr in same st, remove yarn from last st leaving a loop, insert hook through top of first tr, pick up loop just made and draw through top of first tr. Make 1ch to close st. One popcorn st made.
When starting a round make 3ch, this forms the first tr of the first popcorn st, make 4tr in same st, remove yarn from last st leaving a loop, insert hook through top of first 3ch, pick up loop just made and draw through top of first 3ch. Make 1ch to close st. One starting popcorn st made.
Popcorn Flower
Using yellow, make 2ch.
Round 1: 8dc in second ch from hook, join with sl st to top of first st (8dc)
Round 2: using 2nd colour, (1pc, 1ch) in each st around, join with sl st to top of first st (8pc)
Note: There will be 2ch between each st, 1ch which closes pc and 1 more ch to make ch-sp.
Round 3: sl st to first ch-sp, using 3rd colour, (1pc, 1ch, 1pc, 1ch) in each ch-sp around, join with sl st to top of first st (16pc)
Round 4: sl st to first ch-sp, using 4th colour, (1pc, 1ch) in each ch-sp around, join with sl st to top of first st (16pc)
Fasten off and weave in ends.
Knitting needle cover
Using yellow, make 2ch (work in continuous rounds).
Round 1: 8dc in second ch from hook. (8dc)
Rounds 2-3: 1dc in each st around.
Fasten off leaving a long yarn tail to sew to flower.
Push a knitting needle through centre of cover and then sew to under side of flower stitching around flower centre. Weave in ends.
There you have it a knitting needle flower.
I'd love to see your makes, tag me in a post on Instagram, you can find me @flo_and_dot #floanddot.
Thanks Sarah-Jane :)
